CFP for MAP Sessions at the 2020 Meeting of the Medieval Academy of America

Dear MAP Members and Friends,

As you are no doubt aware, the Medieval Association of the Pacific will be meeting next year concurrently with the Medieval Academy of America at the University of California-Berkeley. The dates of the conference are March 26-28, 2020. The MAA Program Committee has allowed MAP to steward three panels of our choosing for inclusion in the 2020 conference program. Upon deliberation, the MAP Council has chosen the following themes for our sessions:

  • “Teaching a Diverse Middle Ages to a Diverse Student Body.” Organizers: Michael Calabrese (m.calabrese@roadrunner.com) and Heather Maring (heather.maring@asu.edu).
  • “Heaven in the Middle Ages.” Organizer: Anna Harrison (anna.harrison@lmu.edu).
  • “Canon Law and Miraculous Justice.” Organizer: Anthony Perron (aperron@lmu.edu).

More detailed descriptions of the sessions can be found here. We are now seeking submissions for these panels. This is a wonderful opportunity to present a paper at one of North America’s most prestigious conferences on medieval studies! Time is of the essence, however. MAP must get its finalized slate of panels and papers to the Medieval Academy by June 1.

If you would like to be considered for one of these sessions, please act quickly by sending your proposal to the panel organizers listed above, preferably no later than Friday, May 10. Submissions will be vetted by the panel organizer(s) along with at least one other MAP officer to ensure fairness and transparency. In accordance with the format prescribed by the Medieval Academy, proposals must include the following:

  • The presenter's name (in form for program publication), institutional affiliation (if any), mailing address, phone number, email address, a brief biography.
  • CV (max. 200 words).
  • Whether the individual is a member of the Medieval Academy of America (MAA) and/or the Medieval Association of the Pacific (MAP).
  • The paper title, paper abstract (max. 300 words).
  • A/V requirements. Session rooms are generally equipped with a ceiling mounted Data/Video Projector linked to a black box with a control panel, computer input, VGA+audio cable with Mac and HDMI adaptors, auxiliary video input, and a DVD/VCR combo deck. Some are "high definition" rooms providing high resolution data/video projection (16:9 - Native display resolution 1920x1200) and a Blu-ray DVD deck. NO COMPUTERS ARE PROVIDED. THOSE WISHING TO USE A/V EQUIPMENT MUST BRING THEIR OWN LAPTOPS.

We will also need presiders and/or commentators for each session, so please contact the organizers if you would be willing to serve in this capacity.

Please note that while presenters need not be MAP members, MAP members are strongly encouraged to submit to these panels. Anyone who delivers a paper for the MAP sessions will need to become a MAP member before the conference.

If you have any further questions, please direct them to the panel organizers. We thank you for your past support of MAP and look forward to seeing you at Berkeley in 2020!

Best regards,

Anthony Perron
