The Benton-Mahoney Award

The Benton-Mahoney Award provides travel funds for all members of the Medieval Association of the Pacific—independent medievalists and graduate students in particular—who might not otherwise receive support from institutions. The award may be used to defray costs connected with delivering a paper at any conference, especially for MAP conferences, or connected to scholarly research.

One to three awards are presented each year (up to $1500 in total). Applications should include a one-page vita, an abstract of a paper submitted to the conference, and a copy of the Call for Papers or conference announcement; if the application is for travel to research, it should include a one-page vita, and a letter outlining the research project. For funding to attend conferences between 31 July 2023 and 1 August 2024, send the above materials by January 5, 2024, to the Vice President of the Association, Alison Perchuk.

The award was named in honor of its progenitor, John F. Benton, MAP President 1982–84, and Dhira B. Mahoney, MAP President, 2000-02. In 2020 the John F. Benton Award was renamed the Benton-Mahoney Award in recognition of Professor Mahoney's tireless support for graduate students and early-career scholars. Her many years of service to MAP was crowned by a financial legacy that will fund the award for many years to come.
