Scholars who do not hold tenure-track positions (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, adjunct/sessional professors, etc.) are invited to apply to take part in a two-part workshop (90 minutes each over 2 days) in which 4-5 participants will share feedback on works-in-progress circulated in advance of the MAP 2024 conference. Participants may share any work that could benefit from peer feedback: drafts of articles, dissertation or book chapters, book or grant proposals. The session length will allow ample discussion for each person’s work (approximately 20-25 minutes each).
Facilitators will provide useful materials and resources responsive to the group’s needs and interests; for instance, we will likely use sections of Wendy Belcher’s Writing Your Journal Article in 12 Weeks and share examples of our own and other scholars’ successful book and grant proposals. We may also, if there is interest, facilitate a discussion of obstacles to writing, including time management, work/life and teaching/research balance, imposter syndrome, experiences of racism and sexism in the academy, etc., and strategies for navigating them. Our ambition, inspired by successful writing groups and conference workshops in which we have taken part, is for members of the group to advance their writing projects, to make timelines and plans for finishing those projects, and to form a cohort of medievalists in different research areas that will continue to be available to each other for further peer support in the future.
Interested parties should submit a brief statement of interest and CV to mo.pareles@ubc.ca no later than May 13, 2024 May 6, 2024. The statement should include information about your goals for the workshop. We will aim to recruit a group diverse in research fields, educational backgrounds, and identities. Registration at the MAP Conference is required to participate.
