Dear MAP Members,
As the officers of the Medieval Association of the Pacific, we are writing to invite you to a special virtual event hosted by MAP entitled “MAP Past and Future,” to be held via Zoom on Friday, November 18, from 2:00-3:30 PST. As you know, MAP was founded in 1966 and is today the largest interdisciplinary medieval organization in western North America, with members around the Pacific Rim. It has long been a welcoming home for scholars at different career stages and in various career pathways.
As a way to celebrate our history and look toward our future, we have invited a panel of former MAP officers to reflect on their experiences in the organization. These include:
Henry Ansgar Kelly (Distinguished Research Professor, Department of English, UCLA; MAP President, 1988-1990)
Nancy van Deusen (Professor of Music, Claremont Graduate University; MAP President, 1996-1998)
Siân Echard (Professor, Department of English, University of British Columbia; MAP President, 2004-2006)
Anita Obermeier (Professor, Department of English, University of New Mexico; MAP President, 2012-2014)
Michael Hanly (Professor, Department of English, Washington State University; MAP President, 2014-2016)
Kevin Roddy (Lecturer, Medieval Studies, UC Davis; Editor of Chronica, 1993-1998 and Secretary Treasurer, 1983-1987)
Our speakers will discuss broadly how the field of medieval studies (and our various disciplines within it) have changed and how MAP itself has changed as well. Continuing our organization’s longstanding commitment to mentoring new scholars, they will also offer advice to graduate students.
At a time of monumental change in higher education, we are thrilled to have such an accomplished group of colleagues to discuss where MAP has come and where we are heading. If you would like to attend, please contact Anthony Perron at Anthony.Perron@lmu.edu for the Zoom link. You do not need to be a MAP member to attend (although we encourage you to join!)
We look forward to seeing you on Friday, November 18 at 2:00 for this exciting program!
Best regards,
Anthony Perron, Loyola Marymount University, President
Heather Maring, Arizona State University, Vice President
Edward M. Schoolman, University of Nevada-Reno, Treasurer
Catherine Saucier, Arizona State University, Secretary
J.A.T. Smith, Pepperdine University, Media Officer
